A cough is an uncontrollable action for clearing your airways. A cough can either produce mucus and phlegm or just produce nothing.

On the other hand, dry cough is a type of cough where no phlegm or mucus is produced. It is usually very irritating and can scar your throat making it very itchy. Dry coughs are usually caused by a virus such as a cold and flu, or even allergies. Treatments of dry cough mostly depend on the cause. This condition can last for up to a week or more.

Dry coughs can be mild or may be severe. This is one of the symptoms of the new virus called “COVID-19”, it is one of the most serious pandemic in the history and is still continuing right now. When you do get dry coughs, you might want to check if you catch the so called virus. But for other cases, a dry cough can easily be treated at home.

If your dry becomes persistent, it may cause problems such as interrupted sleep, fatigue, vomiting, and headaches. To make you aware about dry coughs, here are several causes:

* viral disease, such as a cold or influenza or COVID-19

* asthma

* gastroesophageal reflux

* smoking

* allergic rhinitis

* laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx — the voice box)

* whooping cough

Less common causes are:

* pulmonary embolism

* lung cancer

Dry coughs can be triggered by air pollution, 1st hand or 2nd hand tobacco smoke, breathing cold dry air, inhaling dust or particles, change in temperature, and excessive talking.

But if you happen to get COVID-19, symptoms are usually fever, dry cough, fatigue, body aches, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and nasal congestion.

For this type of virus, there are currently no treatments and vaccines. The only thing best to do is do quarantine and isolate yourself from other people as much as possible because it is a very infectious disease and may be lethal especially for younger and older people.

If you experience difficulties in breathing, you will need to go to your doctor, just to be sure.
