A dry scalp occurs when the scalp does not have enough oil for the skin to be moisturized. A dry scalp can cause dandruff and other forms of dry skin. This condition can cause dandruff which is due to fungal or other scalp infection.


People who have dry skin are obviously more susceptible to dry scalp. The main reasons why you get dry scalps are frequent washing, dry air, and eczema.


People who have dry scalp may usually have flakes from shedding. The difference of dandruff from a dry scalp is that flakes from dry scalp are smaller and whiter.


While dandruff flakes are larger in size with a yellow hue. But both conditions tend to make the scalp itchy and irritating. When you do have a severe case of dry scalp or dandruff, that becomes scaly by frequent scratching and itching. This is a sign that you shall get it treated as soon as you can.


Some people might have experienced being bullied for having flakes in their hair. But it’s totally natural, and can be treated at home or by prescription drugs.


Dry scalps aren’t that extreme of a condition but the results are just annoying and can lower people’s self-esteem. For other people, this condition isn’t severe, but for some it can affect their lifestyle.


In terms of creating a flaky mess, people can make fun of it. The most common symptom of dry scalp is a consistent itching scalp. But it can sometimes also be accompanied by hair loss and dandruff.

A dry scalp isn’t just caused internally, but also externally. Just by simple things you do to your hair or lifestyle.

* Excessive use of hair products such as soaps, shampoos and hair. Over using chemical products on the hair are one factor of dry scalp

* Environmental pollution

* Lifestyle factors such as smoking or a poor diet which can cause dehydration

* Medications


If the root cause of the itchiness and flakiness turns out to be dandruff, the condition can be treated with simple over-the-counter shampoos. If there is no improvement within a month and the scalp appears to be getting irritated or inflamed it is best to make an appointment with your doctor.


An extremely dry scalp on the other hand, creates scabs that are very itchy. This is the worst most developed condition for dry scalp. Continuous scratching on the scalp creates bruises which will heal but since a dry scalp is very itchy, it can result in scabs and other symptoms. Everyone can experience having dry scalp at least once in their life. This is totally normal especially for women with long hair. Women mostly use more hair products than men. But in the case of an extremely dry scalp, it shall be attended by your doctor. Therefore, we need to take extra care of our scalp and it is very significant to choose products that work well against dry skin.
